Sunderland were destined for a relegation battle in 2005/06. Most clubs who gain promotion to the Premier League do. Manager Mick McCarthy was well aware of that, and all the Black Cats supporters were ready for a tough season. But no one expected them to win only 3 games throughout the entire season, which ended in a humiliating relegation, with a tally of a miserable 15 points.
After a disastrous start to the following season Roy Keane was appointed as manager. This was his first foray into management, and he has been an instant success.
Sunderland relentlessly climbed the table, and eventually gained automatic promotion. Last season they showed a tremendous amount of fighting spirit, which helped them to survive, but this proved to be not enough for this season, as the Black Cats find themselves in he relegation zone and Roy Keane leaving his post.

Bottom Line: Tough times ahead...
